Volunteers Wanted for "Tri-To-Win" SavageMan Triathlon Festival

On September 21, 2008 about 600 athletes and an additional 1000 spectators are expected for the 2nd Annual SavageMan Triathlon, including 2004 Olympic bronze medalist Susan Williams and current world record holder Bjorn Andersson from Sweden.

One of the most critical ingredients in staging a successful triathlon is the active participation of enthusiastic, energetic and committed volunteers.

Come witness this world-class event held in beautiful Garrett County and volunteer in one of many roles to support this great event and the savage athletes!

All volunteers who spend a minimum of four-hours receive a complimentary “TRI-TO-WIN” Savageman Volunteer shirt, visor and invitation to the “post-race party.” Many types of volunteer jobs are available at the course aid stations, finish line, out on the course, parking areas, etc. If you or your club, team, school or non-profit group would like to help at the SavageMan Triathlon, please visit www.savagemantri.org/Volunteers.html or contact organizers at info@savagemantri.org.

Decorator's Nook Moving to Oakland - Yard Sale Slated for August 23rd

The Decorator’s Nook is moving their shop to Oakland. In preparation for the move, there will be a “Yard Sale” on Saturday, August 23rd from 8 am to 4 pm.

At the “Yard Sale”, everything must go! There will be custom items available for sale at yard sale prices. All other inventory is on sale for 70% off regular prices. The Decorator’s Nook offers rugs, lamps, linens, Christmas and craft items, and much more.

Farmers Market Updates

There are only two more weeks left to get vegetables from vendors at the Mt. Fresh Producer Association's McHenry market, open on Monday and Thursday from 4-6:30 pm.

John Hopkins Healthcare, LLC Priority Partners will be visiting the Oakland market tomorrow and the McHenry market on August 21 to promote the Maryland Children's Health Insurance Program (MCHIP), the Primary Adult Care Program and a new program for families of children in the MCHIP program. Eligibility is determined by family size and income.

As a thank you to customers, on August 30, the annual Customer Appreciation Day Corn Roast will be held at the Oakland market. Visit the market for free, fresh-cooked corn.

You still have an opportunity to meet with the Master Gardners, volunteer educators for University of Maryland Cooperative Extension. They will be available to ask your questions regarding gardening, pest control and lawn health at the McHenry Market on August 21 and 25.

Finally, don't forget to pick up a reusable market bag now available from vendors at the markets. I've purchased a couple this year and have found them to be really handy. They're made of nonwoven polypropylene and are very durable.

Boating Options on Deep Creek Lake

The New York Times Great Homes and Destinations section ran this article with some boating advice in Getting Out on the Water. Most of the recommended options are available at Deep Creek Lake. Canoes and kayaks can be found for rent and sale at High Mountain Sports. In addition to their Rt. 219 location, they have a post set up at the Deep Creek Lake State Park for convenient rentals.

Most of the sailboats mentioned are also found on the lake, but not as as easy to rent. If you're interested in a sailing lesson, look into the Deep Creek Sailing School. If you're interested in purchasing a sailboat, the Flying Scot company is conveniently located in Deer Park and Scots are the sailboat of choice for most here at Deep Creek. Lasers also have an organized presence on the lake. This weekend is the Fleet 11 District Championships. Head on over to the southern end of the lake to watch these boats in action.

Black Bear Relocated
