Deep Creek Nostalgia

Gcpromo It's been a little light in posting this weekend, because we're cleaning house here on Turkey Neck.  We've gone through drawers and closets that haven't had a good cleaning in years.  In the process, we've stumbled across some interesting items, such as a "Free Vacationland Guidebook" for Garrett County and Deep Creek Lake for the 1978-79 season.   It's been fun going through this book, looking at the advertisements and events calendar.

Some advertisers in the book that are still going strong in Garrett County include Brenneman Well Drilling, First National Bank, Bill's Marine Service, and Will O' The Wisp.  Businesses that are still thriving, but have had some changes along the way are included as well.  There's an ad for the Glen Haven Pizza Pub and Honi Honi Bar with a mention of Old-Time movie night.  Englanders Pharmacy advertises as a "Walgreen Agency Drugstore".  Places that are gone but not forgotten include Bowman's Marina, Walt's "Tips Up" Ski Shop, Ben Franklin and Morrises Country Store.  Sky Valley, The Ridge at Paradise Point and Waters Edge Court were the prominent real estate developments advertised in the book.  The Eleventh Annual Autumn Glory Festival features Miss "Country Sunshine" Dottie West and the Ruth Enlow Library was celebrating its sixth birthday.

Take a look in your old closets and drawers.  Who knows what fun nostalgia you'll come up with?

Help Bring Barn Quilts to Garrett County

Barnquilt1 After admiring other barn quilts across the nation, a group has come together to make them a reality in  Garrett County.  At least nineteen states currently have these rural works of art for residents and visitors to enjoy, but Maryland does not currently have any. Barnquilt2Garrett County may be the first in the state to produce one, thanks to the Barn Quilt Association of Garrett County (BQA).

The group is looking for volunteers and donations from the community to move forward with this project.  They have a very informative web site,  www.garrettbarnquilts.org, with details on what they need, including barns.  On April 12, a kick-off meeting is scheduled at St. Paul's Methodist Church in Oakland.  Anyone interested in joining the group is encouraged to attend.   Also, look for this week's Republican to have detailed information on the barn quilt project as well.
