Visit Swallow Falls or Herrington Manor this weekend for Maple Syrup demonstration.

A local Maple Syrup producer will be on hand to answer questions and demonstrate use of an evaporator in syrup making process. Pure maple products will be offered for sale during the demonstration.

Pancake Breakfast & Maple Syrup Demonstration

A demonstration of the Maple syrup making process along with a Pancake breakfast will be held from 8:30 am to 2:00 pm. A demonstration using an evaporator to make maple syrup will be done along with the pancake breadfast. Pure maple products will be offered for sale during the demonstration and breakfast.

Cost: $8/Adults, $5/children under 12

Chefs Invited to Submit Recipes for "Buy Local" Cookout

Finalists Will Prepare Dishes Featuring Local Products at Government House During Buy Local Challenge Week
 
Governor Martin O’Malley invites chefs using local Maryland ingredients to submit original recipes for the Sixth Annual “Buy Local Cookout,” which will be held at Government House in Annapolis on Thursday, July 25, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Recipes must be submitted by May 6 and include products from at least one Maryland farmer, waterman, or other producer. This year, chefs are being asked to submit simple but creative recipes that showcase ways the average Maryland family can prepare delicious, nutritious meals with locally produced food at home.
 
The cookout promotes the statewide Buy Local Challenge Week (July 20-28), during which all Marylanders are encouraged to eat at least one local product each day of the week.
 
Recipes will be chosen in each of the following categories: appetizer, main dish, side dish or salad, dessert and beverage.
 
Selected teams will be invited to provide, prepare, and share their dish at the Governor's Cookout. Chefs should note that recipes may be published in the Maryland Department of Agriculture’s 2013 Maryland Buy Local Cookout Recipes cookbook. New Germany's Chili Cook-Off

Put your chili to the test at New Germany State Park's 2nd-annual Chili Cook-off.

The 2nd-annual Chili Cook-off will be held at the New Germany Lake House on Saturday, February 16th, from 1:00 – 3:00 PM.  Participants must pre-register for the cook-off no later than February 15th.  Registration is free and electricity will be provided.  Prizes will be awarded in three categories:  Home-style, Fiery Cauldron, and Ladle of Glory (Best Overall).

Cross-country skis and snowshoes will be available for rent at the New Germany Lake House (weather permitting).  A service charge of $3/ person for Maryland residents, and $5/ person for out-of-state residents will be collected at the park entrance.

Chamber Hosts Next Business After Hours at ASCI on May 16

The Garrett County Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announced that Adventure Sports Center International will be hosting the next Business After Hours on May 16 from 6 pm – 8 pm.

Enjoy catering by DC’s Bar and Restaurant and learn more about ASCI’s activities including whitewater rafting, rock climbing, hiking, biking, and more.   ASCI is home to international-caliber whitewater events, festivals and adventure sport competitions. Inspired by the dramatic history and traditions from 40 years of whitewater exploration and racing in Garrett County, ASCI hosts national and international caliber events, as well as races, competitions and festivals for children, developing athletes, families, businesses and weekend warriors.

Mountain Man "Pig Out" for a Cause

Archie's BBQ has partnered with Cindy's Fund for the Second Mountain Man "Pig Out " on Saturday, May 12, 2012 at 5 pm.
 
Last years "Pig Out" had 33 competitors and over 200 people stopped by to eat barbeque and witness this challenge for charity.   They  raised almost $5000.00 for the Garrett County Community.  You can help raise money for Cindy's Fund by simply purchasing food during the event or if you dare, join in as a competitor. 
 
Cindy's Fund is a Garrett County organization whose purpose is to provide assistance for Garrett County citizens who have been stricken with cancer.

Garrett Mentors Night at McDonalds

Tomorrow night,  April 12th,  show support for Garrett Mentors by dining at McDonald's in Oakland between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m.  McDonald's will donate 15% of all proceeds to Garrett Mentors.

Garrett Mentors is a non-profit organization with about seventy five volunteer mentors that assist needy elementary students in Garrett County coming from a difficult family situation.

Cardin Visit FireFly Farms

U.S. Senator Ben Cardin visited the FireFly Farms Creamery and Market in Accident on Friday to tour the new award-winning goat cheese production facility and to congratulate them on their success.  Since 2010, FireFly Farms has increased employment by 80 percent company-wide.  Senator Cardin also met with members of the Garrett County Commission.

FireFly Farms is a privately owned company dedicated to the art of cheese making.  The business began in 2002 in Bittinger and recently opened its new facility in Accident.  Its artisanal cheeses are made according to time-honored tradition; and each piece is produced and ripened with handmade care. 

FireFly Farms Creamery cheeses have received many awards for its cheeses. Among its most recent awards are: In 2011, First Place Ribbon from the American Dairy Association for its Mountain Top Bleu (aged goat blue cheese), which was also named by Saveur magazine as one of its editor’s favorite 50 American cheeses in 2005.  Mountain Top Bleu also received a Gold Medal at the 2010 World Cheese Awards and was selected as America’s top goat’s milk blue cheese at the American Cheese Society Conference. FireFly’s Bella Vita was one of only two cheeses from the United States to receive Super Gold recognition at the 2010 World Cheese Awards. 

Winterfest Chili Cook-Off to be Held at New Germany State Park

New Germany State Park will be hosting a Winterfest Chili Cook-off on Saturday, January 14th, 2012.  In addition to the chili cook-off, the festival will feature a snowshoe race, a cross-country ski race, and family-friendly craft activities.  

A schedule of events is as follows: 
Snowshoe 50-Yard Dash:  Registration – 11:00 AM, Race – 11:30 AM
Cross-Country Ski Race:  Registration – 12:00 PM, Race – 1:00 PM
Chili Cook-Off:  Public Tasting & Judging – 2:00 PM (Pre-registration required).Awards Ceremony:  3:30 PM
Craft Activities:  11:00 AM – 4:00 PM 
Registration for all events will be free of charge and will take place at the New Germany Lake House.

Mountain State Brewing Company Delivers on a Great Time

Last Friday night, Mountain State Brewing Company accommodated a group of close to thirty people on short notice for a family birthday party.   If you have never been there, you have to put this place on your list.  The great food and helpful staff were top-notch.  Add that to a warm relaxing environment and you are in for a fun evening.   Friends from out-of-town were impressed with the relaxing environment for both adults and kids.  The menu features a large choice of flatbread pizzas as well as salads and burritos.  My husband, a man who knows his pizza,  commented that these are not the small "boutique" pizzas that you might expect, but full-sized respectable offerings.  This is a great pick for any time of year, but especially for the upcoming season, as it is conveniently located close to the Wisp Resort on Sang Run Road.

Chamber Hosts Next Business After Hours at Dutch's at Silver Tree on December 7th

Come out and celebrate the holiday season as the Garrett County Chamber holds their next Business After Hours at Dutch’s at Silver Tree on December 7th from 6 pm – 8 pm. Enjoy delicious food and drink as you mingle with fellow Chamber members and Chamber staff at our monthly networking event.

And to celebrate the season of giving, the Chamber is supporting the local Toys for Tots Campaign to help give children in our area a special gift for the holidays. If you would like to bring a new, unwrapped toy for the local "Toys for Tots Campaign" to the December Business After Hours, we will give you a free ticket to a future Business After Hours event.

Dutch's is well known for their restaurant in Frederick, MD and have recently renovated the former Silver Tree Inn to provide an all-new menu and atmosphere.
