Friday, August 8
11:00 a.m. Creating an Owl - Join the Naturalist to learn about the adaptations and secrets of owls. Meet one of the owls up close and then create your own. Develop nature journaling skills through observation and drawing or just come for fun.
1:30 p.m. Tie Dye on the Beach! Meet us at the beach to make your own tie dye shirt and create your own conservation message for your shirt! “Give a Hoot Don’t Pollute” - wait that one is taken. You get the idea! $12.00 per shirt. Approx. 1 hour.
Saturday, August 9
11:00 a.m. What’s that Reptile? Come to theDiscoveryCenter to learn about the reptiles and amphibians in the center and even have a chance to touch these amazing cold-blooded creatures! Approx. 45 minutes. Free
11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Hayrides at Sang Run roughly every half hour. $2 per person.
11:00 a.m. Little Guard For kids age 5-7. Meet at the beach and learn the skills of a lifeguard. Kids will run a relay, practice throwing a lifesaving device, learn how to recognize a troubled swimmer and more. NO swimming required. Free.
8:00 p.m. Campfire Program “Celebrate Smokey Bears 70th Birthday. Meet Smokey!
Sunday, August 10
11:00 a.m. Aquatic Adventures Join the Naturalist on the docks of theDiscoveryCenter for this exciting adventure! Check out fish traps, aqua scopes and learn about the critters that call Deep Creek home. Approx. ½ hour, Free.
11:00 -1:00p.m. A Taste Of Appalachia at Friend's Store (Sang Run). Experience a Dutch Oven cooking demonstration, candle dipping and crafts. Free
2:00 p.m. Aviary Encounter. Come to the aviary to get up close and personal with the birds of prey. Learn some interesting facts and watch them eat! Bring a camera because they will be perched for a great photo opportunity! Free.
New Germany State Park
Friday, August 8th:
Paddle Like a Pro, 4:00 PM
This weekly activity includes hands-on instruction on basic paddling techniques, followed by free time to explore New Germany Lake by kayak or row boat. Paddle Like a Pro is offered every Friday, weather permitting. Cost is $5.00 per boat. Boats are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Meet at the Nature center next to the Lake House.
Greg Latta Concert, 7:00 PM
New Germany State Park will be featuring a free acoustic concert by award-winning musician Greg Latta on Friday, August 8th. Latta will be performing a combination of Appalachian, Irish, old-time and traditional music using instruments such as the hammered and Appalachian dulcimers, guitar, banjo, cittern, Irish bouzouki, harmonica, concertina, limberjack, and recorder. The concert will begin at 7:00 pm in the New Germany Lake House and is suitable for all ages.
Saturday, August 9th:
Woodsy Walk, 10:00 AM
Participants are invited to join the park naturalist on this guided one-mile hike and learn how to identify some common plants found in the park. Participants are encouraged to bring drinking water and wear appropriate footwear. Meet at the Nature Center.
Maryland's Black Bears, 7:30 PM
Did you know that August 9th is Smokey Bear's 70th birthday? In honor of Smokey (our nation's most famous black bear), Maryland State Bear Biologist, Harry Spiker, will be presenting a special program on Maryland's Black Bears at the New Germany Lake House. Topics for the program will include black bear biology, history, habitat, and behavior. The presentation will also include information about the DNR's bear management program, and how people can learn to coexist with these native animals. The program will begin at 7:30 pm inside the Lake House, and there is no cost for admission.
Sunday, August 10th:
Celebrate the CCC "On-The-Air”, 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM
In celebration of the Civilian Conservation Corps, commonly known as the "CCC", New Germany State Park will be participating in the first annual CCC On-The-Air Weekend on August 10th, from 10 am to 5 pm. The CCC On-The-Air Weekend is a nationwide event in which Amateur Radio Operators will be setting up radio operations from the actual locations of former CCC camps throughout the United States. As New Germany State Park was once the site of a CCC camp, local Amateur Radio Operator, Scott Beitzel, will setting up communications from the Recreation Hall - a structure built by the CCC in the 1930's. Throughout the day, Beitzel will be communicating with radio operators stationed at other CCC camps across the nation. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about Amateur Radio and also about the important role of the CCC in our nation's history.
CCC Hike, 1:00 PM
On this leisurely hike with the park naturalist, guests will learn about how the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) played an all-important role in the development of New Germany State Park. Meet at the Nature Center, next to Lake House
