Free Seminars on How to Shop for Electricity

In response to recent rate hikes for commercial customers in the BGE and Allegheny Power service areas, Westminster, MD-based Synergetic Energy Pools, Inc., is hosting ten free Energy Procurement Seminars over the next few weeks for commercial electricity customers in Carroll, Frederick, Washington, Allegany and Garrett Counties.  The Maryland Public Service Commission and the local utilities are encouraging businesses to explore their options and learn more about the electricity shopping process.

The Seminars are free and open to the public; however registration is required due to limited seating.  Business owners will receive information about electricity deregulation and how to shop for electricity in Maryland’s deregulated market.  Attendees will also hear details about the newly-formed Western Maryland Energy Buying Pool.  BGE and Allegheny Power customers participating in the most recent Synergetic program secured fixed-rate contracts for a 48-month term.  Seminar dates, times and locations are available at www.synergeticenergypools.com, by emailing info@synergeticenergypools.com or by calling 443-605-4871 or 443-244-3049. Interested persons may register for the free Seminar of their choice.  Attendees are not required to enroll in the Energy Buying Pool program.

While electric delivery services continue to be provided by the local utility (BGE or Allegheny Power), commercial customers now have the ability to choose their supplier.  According to the Maryland Public Service Commission, small commercial customers in the Allegheny Power service area experienced a 5.9% rate increase for their electric supply while medium sized commercial customers saw increases of 67% increase, both effective June 1, while BGE commercial customers have seen increases of 19.5 to 66.1%.

Small and medium-sized businesses, nonprofits, churches, municipalities, private schools, property management firms and other organizations are encouraged to attend one of the Seminars.  Businesses and organizations currently in electric supply contracts that are about to expire are also encouraged to attend.  While the Energy Buying Pool is limited to businesses with commercial accounts, home-based business owners with residential electric accounts are invited to attend to learn about deregulation and ways to save money on electricity.

There is a per-location fee of $250 to enroll in the Western Maryland Energy Buying Pool.  No organization membership fee is required, and there are no other fees or commissions for the term of the contract.

Synergetic Energy Pools, Inc. is an energy procurement consulting firm dedicated to strengthening local communities through the formation of energy buying pools designed to help small and medium-sized businesses manage rising electricity costs.

Where Can I Find Wi-Fi at Deep Creek Lake?

Most of us want to relax and "get away from it all" in Garrett County.  The reality is that some people are not able to take an extended vacation, perhaps not even a long weekend, without checking in on line. Some of the need to stay connected is mandated by an employer or business, and some perhaps self-imposed. The Baltimore Business Journal recently reported on a new phenomenon which Solutions Research Group calls "disconnect anxiety".

Disconnect anxiety refers to various feelings of disorientation and nervousness experienced when a person is deprived of Internet or wireless access for a long period of time.

So, what can you do to avoid "disconnect anxiety" in Garrett County?  Below is a list of businesses, restaurants and places to stay that offer wireless Internet access.   Most of the services listed below are free of charge, but please call to confirm with the business before you go or book a stay.   There are also homes available that have computers with Internet access or wifi, so be sure and ask the rental agency before you book.   We did our best to research local businesses to find these places, but can't guarantee that we hit every spot.  If you know of or own a business that offers wi-fi that isn't named here, please email info@deepcreekblog.com and we'll add it to the list.
