Near the Fourth of July each year, the Maryland Humanities Council brings the Chautauqua tent to six community colleges in Maryland, including Garrett College. At a Chautauqua, scholar/actors portray a historical character for a community audience, complete with costume, props, mannerisms and accents. After the presentation, the performer answers the audience's questions first in character, then as him- or herself. This year's event in Garrett County is made possible by Maryland Humanities Council, Garrett College, Garrett County Arts Council and Garrett Lakes Arts Festival. The theme is "Civil Rights: Taking a Stand". The free events runs from Saturday July 5 through Tuesday July 8, 2008 under the tent on the Garrett College lawn. This year's Chautauqua includes portrayals of the following figures:
Martin Luther King Jr. (portrayed by Lenneal Henderson)
George Wallace (portrayed by Doug Mishler)
Rosa Parks (portrayed by Gwendolyn Briley-Strand )
Malcolm X (portrayed by Charles Pace)
Five hundred seats are set under the tent and there is plenty of room outside of the tent for lawn chairs and picnic blankets. Bring a picnic or purchase food on the College lawn from Jearbryos starting at around 5:00. Dinner sandwich boxes will be offered with choices of crabcake, pulled pork or Italian sausage sandwiches. Hot dogs, iced tea and Coke will also be for sale and the Lakeside Creamery will be on site selling ice cream cones.
In the event of rain, the performances will be held in the Garrett College Auditorium.
