Garrett County Chamber Hosts Maryland State Banjo, Fiddle & Mandolin Championships October 10 & 11, 2014
The Mountain Maryland Gateway to the West Heritage Area, a program of the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Oakland Business Association (GOBA), present the Official Maryland State Banjo & Mandolin Championships on Friday, October 10, 2014 and the Fiddle Championships on Saturday, October 11, 2014, sponsored by GCC Technologies.
Chuck Dicken, who is the Station Director for WFWM Public Radio 91.9 FM in Frostburg, will emcee the event this year. The judges will include Jeff Munson and Cory and Heather Wharton. New to the event this year, Rhythm and Rubbish from Crellin Elementary School will kick off Friday evening prior to the start of the Championships. The Crellin Rhythm & Rubbish Band is a STOMP inspired ensemble. Students create and perform music using buckets, trash cans, and "instruments" many would consider to be garbage. At Intermission Steve Smith, from The Steve Smith Band, will be making a special appearance and showing off his expertise on the banjo.
Saturday evening, the judges will perform during intermission. Heather Wharton was the 2010 Maryland Fiddle State Champion, 2008 Deer Creek Fiddle & Vocal Champion and the 2007 Mid-Atlantic Grand Fiddle Champion. Cory received a bluegrass music scholarship and graduated from East Tennessee State University’s prestigious Bluegrass, Old-time and Country Music program. Jeff Munson was a member of Larry and Joe and the White Horse Mountain Boys, as well as the popular local bluegrass band, Highland Grass. Jeff has had the privilege of sharing the stage with many bluegrass greats such as Ronnie Reno, Bill Yates and has expansive knowledge when it comes to bluegrass and mountain music.
