National Trails Day occurs on the first Saturday of every June and encourages people of all ages to discover and enjoy America’s vast network of trails. Below is a listing of opportunities to celebrate this day in Garrett County.
Friendsville Trails Alliance & Maryland DNR Kendall Trail Clean-Up Day
Things will kick off at 9am at the Kendall Trail trailhead on Morris Ave in Friendsville. There is little if any parking there so please park in the spaces near the Friendsville Library on 315 Chestnut Street (turn east at the First Christian Church off of 1st Ave). and walk over (toward the Yough River)
There will be extra water for everyone. We will also have a little tent set up at the trail head for shade for elders and others who want to be around but are unable to participate in the actual clean-up.
Garrett Trails and Savage River Lodge are hosting trail cleanup activities on the Mt. Aetna trail network located in Savage River State Forest near Finzel from 10am-2pm
Garrett Trails is also hosting an event at the popular Margraff Plantation mountain bike trail network outside of Accident from 9am-1pm
National Trails Day at New Germany State Park
The National Trails Day celebration will begin with the annual Katie’s 5K Race (& 1 Mile Walk/ Run), from 9:00-11:30 AM. The Katie’s 5K is an annual 5km race in memory of Katie DeRosa, a local 13-year-old who was tragically struck and killed by a vehicle while training for her freshman year of cross-country. Katie was an organ donor and gave renewed life to 5 people. The race takes place on trails and roadways within New Germany State Park. Registration begins at 7:30 am at the Lake House and the race begins at 9:00 am. Proceeds sponsor two college scholarships in Katie’s memory. Following the race, the fun will continue with a Geocaching Challenge, from 2:00-4:00 PM.
The Geocaching Challenge will include instruction on the basics of geocaching, (a worldwide treasure hunting game), followed by a competitive race to find caches hidden in the park. Beginners are welcome to attend, and a limited supply of GPS units will be available for loan during the event. Participants are encouraged to dress for the weather, wear adequate footwear, and bring drinking water.

National Trails Day at Herrington Manor State Park
1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Celebrate National Trails Day at Herrington Manor by joining the park naturalist for an event entitled "Trees of the Forest". Participants will walk the park's trails, be shown examples of the trees, shrubs, and plants native to the high-mountain Garrett Co ecosystem, and given pointers how to identify different species on their own. Please provide your own water and wear shoes/clothing appropriate for a backcountry walk. Event is expected to last approximately one hour.
