3:00 PM – Build a Birdhouse!
New Germany is for the birds! During this hands-on project, participants are invited to join the park naturalist to learn how to build their very own natural red cedar bird house. The cost is $20 per bird house, which includes all building and decorating materials. Meet at the Nature Center, next to the Lake House.
Thursday, July 4th:
10:30 AM—Let Freedom Ring
Celebrate Independence Day by learning about the majestic Bald Eagle, and how this bird of prey became our national symbol. Participants may paint a miniature version of a Bald Eagle to take home and display with pride. Meet at the Nature Center. Cost: $2.00/person.
1:00 PM—Free Fishing 101
In celebration of Maryland’s Free Fishing Day, New Germany State Park will provide a free Fishing 101 class at New Germany Lake. Beginner anglers of all ages are welcome to participate. The class will include basic fishing techniques, site selection, bait selection, casting tips, etiquette, and actual fishing. Twenty fishing rods will be available for loan during the event, and bait will be provided by the Friends of New Germany.
3:00 PM—Noshing in Nature
This activity will feature a short hike with the park naturalist, in which participants will learn about wild edibles (plants you can eat!). Participants are encouraged to wear appropriate footwear (close-toed shoes). Meet at the Nature Center, next to the Lake House.
Friday, July 5th:
8:30 AM—Birding by Ear!
During this program, the park naturalist will help participants learn how to identify some common birds by their songs and other vocalizations. Participants are encouraged to bring their own binoculars and birding field guide, or buy them at the park. Meet at the Nature Center, next to the Lake House.
11:00 AM– Create a Hiking Stick
Families are invited to “stick around” and make a commemorative hiking stick to take home with them. The cost is $12 per stick, which includes a pre-cut “diamond willow” hiking stick and all decorating and finishing materials. Meet at the Nature Center, next to the Lake House.
3:00 PM– Trees of the CCC Hike
The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was often referred to as President Roosevelt’s “Tree Army.” Join the naturalist to learn about the numerous trees planted by Company 326, at New Germany. Meet at the Nature Center.
6:30 PM - Old Time Jam
Musicians and spectators of all ages are invited to share and enjoy traditional folk, bluegrass, and other “old-time” Appalachian music. Admission is free, and refreshments and gift items will be available for purchase. Meet at the Lake House.
Saturday, July 6th:
10:30 AM—Nature Painting
During this fun and interactive program, kids (and kids at heart) are invited to take off their shoes and use their feet to create a nature-themed masterpiece! Participants are encouraged to wear appropriate clothes for painting. Meet at the Nature Center.
1:00 PM —Alien Invaders
During this easy hike, participants will learn how to identify some of the common non-native and invasive plants found in the area. More importantly, participants will learn about the negative impacts of these “alien invaders,” and why native plants are so important to our environment. Meet at the Nature Center, next to the Lake House.
3:30 PM—Nature Photography
Ever wonder how photographers get those great nature shots you see? Or what photographic masters see in their favorite images? Encourage others to care for our natural world when you share photos that capture the magnificence and wonder of your favorite places and scenes in nature. Join the naturalist to learn some creative ways to do just this!
7:00 PM — Fireside Program: Blacksmithing 101
This fireside program will feature award-winning metal sculptor and blacksmith, Kenny Braitman. This will be the first of three workshops, in which Braitman will provide hands-on demonstrations and instruction on the unique art of sculpting metal. Additional workshops will be held on July 20 and 27th. Meet at the Nature Center.
Sunday, July 7th:
1:00 PM—Terrapin Time!
Guests are invited to join the park naturalist for feeding time at the Nature Center and learn some interesting facts about the new Diamondback Terrapin.
