On Wednesday, June 30, the Garrett County Arts Council held its annual membership meeting at The Gallery Shop in Oakland. Every year since 1995 the Arts Council has recognized a person or persons who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to the arts in Garrett County. This year’s honor was presented to Alan and Sue Arnson.
Upon establishing a home in Garrett County 20 years ago, the Arnsons started their own business, The Loft Shop, to promote local art. They have devoted much of their lives to becoming artists themselves. Alan is a wood worker and has volunteered with the Garrett Lakes Arts Festival including working with the Symphony Committee. Sue is a committed member to all aspects of the Garrett County Arts Council and is the immediate past president. Her art knowledge includes work in watercolor, photography, jewelry making, monotype prints and more.
The couple’s work with GCAC has been invaluable. Under Sue’s organization, the Arts Council has experienced continued growth, developed a Studio Artist Tour each July, worked with ASCI to provide gallery space in the McHenry area, and provided an exceptional year-round retail outlet at The Gallery Shop. Both have become advocates for all aspects of the arts in our region.
The Arts Council annual membership meeting was attended by over 100 members and the general public. The business meeting was followed by a reception for local artist Robert Yonke. In addition to watercolor landscapes, Yonke’s work includes a series of painting of various musicians performing and he has provided artwork for the International Bluegrass Music Association. During the reception, a group of Yonke’s local picking partners provided music for the crowd.
Each year the Garrett County Arts Council provides monetary support to other local art projects and those awards were announced at the meeting. In 2010, GCAC will be distributing $42,000 in grant money to 18 Garrett County projects or organizations. GCAC receives funding from Garrett County government, the Maryland State Arts Council and support from our members.
