Gift cards to presenting donors at July 3-4-5 blood drives; Supplies of three blood types at or below a one-day supply
Need to gas up before heading out for your Fourth of July outing? Forgot to get the hot dog buns for your family cookout?
The Greater Alleghenies Blood Services Region of the American Red Cross will help area residents put the finishing touches on their Fourth of July weekend festivities in return for coming forward to help meet area blood needs.
Present to donate platelets at the region’s five platelet donor centers or blood at any area Red Cross blood drive on July 4, 5 or 6 and you’ll drive off with a $5.00 gift card, while supplies last. (Platelet donor centers are located in Pennsylvania – Altoona, Beaver, Greensburg, Johnstown and State College.)
“You can use it to buy gas or last-minute items for your holiday picnic,” stated Lisa Hart, senior director, donor recruitment. “It’s our thank you for making time amid holiday gatherings to help the sick and injured in the area.
“Patient needs continue 24/7, 365 days of the year. Along with the potential for increased travel over long holiday weekends comes the increased risk for accidents.”
That possibility prompts concerns among regional officials due to current supply levels of type O negative blood, known as the universal blood type. As of this morning, the 100-county region had a one-day or less supply of O negative and A negative blood types, and just over a one-day supply of B negative.
