On Tuesday, Sept. 30, the tri-state region will have the chance to laugh at national politics, regardless of party affiliation, when the Frostburg State University Cultural Events Series brings The Capitol Steps to the Pealer Recital Hall in the FSU Performing Arts Center. The show begins at 7:30 p.m.
The Capitol Steps began in 1981 as a group of Senate staffers who at a Christmas party set out to satirize the very people and places that employed them. In the years that followed, many of the Steps ignored the conventional wisdom (“Don’t quit your day job!”). Although not all of the current members of the Steps are former Capitol Hill staffers, taken together, the performers have worked in a total of 18 Congressional offices and represent over 60 years of collective House and Senate staff experience. They have since become a Washington, D.C., institution whose slogan is “We put the Mock in Democracy.”
The Capitol Steps have recorded 28 albums. Their latest, “Campaign and Suffering,” stars the men and women who would be president: McCain, Romney, Huckabee, Thompson, Giuliani, Obama, Edwards, Clinton, Kucinich and more. Their song parodies and skits have been featured on NBC, CBS, ABC and PBS, and can be heard four times a year on national Public Radio’s “Politics Takes a Holiday” radio specials.
Tickets for the FSU performance are $25 for adults and $18 for youth under 17. Group discount tickets are also available. Tickets may be ordered online at ces.frostburg.edu or by calling 301-687-3137.
