The War on the Emerald Ash Borer
Last year I posted about the emerald ash borer and efforts to stop this bug from moving into the area. The insect still poses a threat to Maryland's ash population, and the Baltimore Sun reports on the latest weapon in this battle. The Maryland Department of Agriculture will be hanging traps along roadsides in an effort to stop bugs that might be brought into the area by travelers.
State workers will hang about 400 of the 12-inch-by-24-inch triangular purple beetle traps along roadsides, just east of Cumberland and westward.
The traps, which are sticky and baited with a compound that simulates a distressed tree, are designed to attract the destructive beetle, should there be any in the region.
Department officials said residents should not be concerned if they see the traps and should not disturb them.
State officials are still reminding visitors not to bring firewood into Maryland from other states, rather to purchase it locally when getting to their destination.
