Friend's Store

Those of you from the Sang Run area will recognize the store in this watercolor by Robert Yonke, now up on his website at www.appalachianstudio.com.  Thanks to Becky Korns at The Friend Family Association of America for providing some background history on the store and Charlotte Sebold at the Chamber for encouraging him to paint it. 

Deep Creek Lake State Park Update

This just in from Patty at the State Park...the main gate into the Deep Creek Lake State Park is closed for season.  Visitors may enter through the 24 hour boat ramp gate which is located down State Park Road from the main gate.  Parking is available in the boat trailer parking area and they can walk into the park from there. Restrooms in the boat trailer parking lot are still open.  All other restrooms are closed for the season.

Parking is also available in the Discovery Center parking lot, but the gate closes at 5:00 pm.  The Discovery Center is still open Friday through Sunday from 10 am until 4pm.

Key Ingredients Exhibit

Don't miss the Smithsonian Institution's Key Ingredients:  America By Food Exhibit while you can catch it at FSU's Compton Science Center.  The traveling exhibit runs until November 10th. 

We Sing!

WE SING! is a choral showcase featuring Allegany County's vocal ensembles:  the FSU Chamber Choir, the Chorus of the Potomac, and the Cumberland Choral Society.  The WE SING!  choral showcase will include a variety of general and seasonal music that will appeal to audiences of all ages and musical preferences.  Adult admission is $5 and under 16 is free.  The performance begins at 8:00 pm on Friday November 2nd at Windsor Hall on the Downtown Cumberland Mall.   For more information, visit the Allegany Arts Council web site.

Firefly Farms Award Winning Cheese

Thanks to Cheryl DeBerry for sending me a message about FireFly Farms winning awards at the 2007 American Dairy Goat Association competition held in Ft. Collins, Colorado.  The local farm earned two bronze medals, three gold medals and "Reserve Best in Show" for their artisan goat cheeses.

Camping Updates for Garrett County

Thanks to Patty at the Discovery Center for sending updated information today regarding the camping status of State Parks in the area.  The campgrounds at Deep Creek Lake State Park and New Germany State Park are now closed for the season.  The cabins at New Germany State Park and Herrington Manor State Park are open year round. 

Camping is still available at Big Run State Park or Swallow Falls State Park.  Big Run is semi-primitive and Swallow Falls is only open until December 9th.

Primitive camping is available at Potomac/Garrett State Forest or the Savage River Forest.

For those of you not necessarily into camping, but still wanting to connect with nature, the Discovery Center remains open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm.  Arrangements can be made in advance for group programs or tours.

Pilot Travel Center Update

The Times-News has an update on the Pilot Travel Center going in at Chestnut Ridge at exit 22 on I-68.

National Players at Garrett College

National Players will perform "Call of the Wild", based upon the works of Jack London, on Friday evening in the Garrett College Auditorium at 7:30 pm.  Presented by Garrett Lakes Arts Festival, National Players has performed for the public in thirty five states and ten foreign countries.  They describe themselves as "reaching audiences that are isolated geographically or economically; audiences that would otherwise never see quality live performances of classic plays".
