Sunset Over Deep Creek

Maybe it's a sign of getting older, but this is the first summer that I've really made a point to sit down and watch the sunset.  My family and I have been making our way over to the Yacht Club every chance that we get to watch it go down.  My four year old has really taken to this ritual.  Last night it struck me how many years I've been at the lake and all of the sunsets that I've missed or simply haven't paid attention to... Our view is from Turkey Neck across the lake with the sun going down somewhere over Penn Cove.  Last night the view was a perfect red circle with just enough haze to make it kind of a pastel red.  I wish I had pictures to show you.  I'll try to get one this week as I'm sure there will be another great one.

Crochet Designs Like You've Never Seen

I met some talented artists at Art in the Park this year.    I found Georgia Wild with some very interesting products.  Georgia is a published crochet artist and incorporates traditional crochet stitches with non-traditional materials, such as silver, to create one-of-a-kind jewelry and art.  In addition to designing custom jewelry for all budgets, Georgia is available for crochet instruction, in-home trunk shows and repair of crocheted items.  You can read all about Georgia and view some of her work at http://www.fertilehandsdesigns.com/.   I believe that she is planning at being at some upcoming festivals in this area, so keep an eye out for her. 

The Garrett County Art Glass Tour

The Garrett County Art Glass Tour, now an annual event, is scheduled for this coming weekend, August 3 - August 5.  Hours are 10am to 5pm each day.  This is a free self guided tour of three local glass studios and galleries, all within a ten mile radius. 

Each studio depicts a different glass art form.  Lou DiCarlo works with Stained Glass.  At his gallery you will find Tiffany style lamp shades, colorful windows, jewelry boxes, sun catchers, clocks and other items.  He is located in Mountain Lake Park, just outside of Oakland.

Simon Pearce Gallery is internationally known for beautiful blown glass items.  Perfect clear glass tableware is the trademark for this studio.  At Simon Pearce there is a catwalk for visitors to view the action of the teams of glassblowers.  Simon Pearce is also in Mountain Lake Park off of Route 135. 

Snowbird Creations Glass Studio, which I've written about before, features art glass that has been fused or melted in a kiln.  Julie Turrentine is the artisan and she has a diverse glass gallery and fully equipped studio on site.  Her dichroic glass jewelry is her trademark, but she also enjoy creating large glass sculptures, glass paintings and designer tableware.  Her studio is located in the Sky Valley vicinity in Swanton. 

This weekend is a unique opportunity for visitors to step inside the workplace of three very unique glass studios, meet the artists, and purchase handcrafted artwork.

Historic Bridge Slated for Restoration

The Times-News reports this morning on plans announced to restore the U.S. 40 Alternate Bridge over the Casselman River. 

Black Bear Hunting Permits

The DNR begins accepting black bear hunting permit applications on August 1st.    The DNR's web site has all of the details. 

Nightime Bass Tournament

The 2nd Annual Bill's Outdoor Center Night Tournament will be held on August 11th and 12th.  The Outdoor Center's website has all the details.  Note, entry forms and fees are due on August 10th at 6pm.

Bears in the Lake

Local Realtor Jon Bell's blog has some great pictures of a bear swimming across the lake.  I think about bears when I'm walking in the woods, but I have to admit that it never really occurred to me that I might run across one on the lake.

Wine Tastings at the Fireside Deli & Wine Shop

Maryellen from the Fireside Deli & Wine Shop dropped me a note to please remind readers that the Shop holds wine tastings every Saturday from noon until 4:00 pm.  She carries mostly small production, specialty wines and features at least five at the tastings...always a fun event.

Van-Dells at the Garrett County Fair

If you like movies from the 50s and 60s, you'll be pleased to note that the Van-Dells will be performing on the evening of Tuesday August 14th on the 4-H stage at the Garrett County Fair.

Here's another great video from the Backwater Angler.   In addition to maintaining an enjoyable and informative web site, Backwater Angler has a full service fly shop and offers guide services with six full times guides and three full time staff members.  Theaux encourages readers to check out the "Backwater Angler Overnighter" as they still have some openings for this program. 

They are also very concerned about Whirling Disease in Western Maryland and provide information on their site as to how to prevent the spread of it.   

Local Instructor On The Move

Jennifer Christophel from Balanced Body Studio at Dry Dock Plaza was nice enough to send me pictures and information regarding her two first place titles in a Pittsburgh Ballroom Exhibition.  She - and her dance partner, U.S. Professional Rising Star Champion Terry Sweeney - won first place in both a professional-amateur division and peoples' choice during the April 28th event. Her website, www.balancedbodystudio.com,  has more pictures from the event.

I also just read in the Republican this past week that she recently earned national certification for the Pilates Method Alliance (PMA) Pilates certified teacher designation.  If you've ever taken a Pilates class, you'll understand what a feat this is.  I've been told by one of her Pilates students that her classes are excellent.
