With all of the warm weather we've had so far this year, you might wonder why I would be writing about dogsledding. I was recently interested to learn that dogsledding is an accessible activity here in Garrett County almost any time of the year. Husky Power Dogsledding, at Mountain Maryland Kennels in Accident, offers year round educational and mushing opportunities for folks of all ages. Owners Linda and Mike Herdering bring years of experience with Huskies to their guests, and I recommend checking out "About the Owners" profile on their website. A visit to their Kennel gives an opportunity to learn about northern sledding and to see how these "snow dogs" live, play and train.
But what about the snow, or lack thereof? In addition to a traditional dogsled, the Kennel has a Touri, or dogsled on wheels, which allows for mushing without snow. The Touri is designed to carry one to three passengers and their musher behind a team of eight to twelve dogs. There is currently only one other cart of this kind in the United States.
The dogs can pull in most conditions, except extreme heat, so most months of the year allow visitors to experience mushing. The typically hot months of July and August are usually reserved for kennel tours only.
Visitors can choose from some of the Tours and Adventures listed below. Most include a hands on kennel visit accompanied by rides of various lengths.
- Kennel visit only - This is approximately a two hour visit. No ride is included, but visitors will learn all about the huskies and see how they live, play and train.
- Mush Hours - This visit offers a one to two hour kennel tour/presentation and includes a thirty minute ride.
- The Musher Experience - This is a longer adventure. After a kennel visit, you can spend up to two hours with the dog team out on the trails. This option also offers a chance to drive the sled with expert guidance.
- A Taste of Mushing - Periodically, short rides only are offered on the Kennel's wooded home trails or at Deep Creek Lake State Park to those who prefer a taste of dogsledding. These are open to the public on a drop-in no reservation basis. Dates and times are on their website, or call to inquire.
- Group Mushing - Any group, such as a Scout Troop or family reunion, can visit the kennel for a two to four hour private experience which includes a custom kennel visit and short rides for everyone.
What a way to check out the beautiful Garrett County scenery or to round out a great vacation. All programs are by reservation except for "A Taste of Mushing". Customized adventures of all kinds are available in addition to the formal programs outlined above. Just call or email the Kennel to discuss your idea.
